Classic Era versus Vanilla downloads
Players often use “Vanilla” to mean Classic Era, but private-server clients can use older interfaces such as 1.12. The current ElvUI package is verified for Blizzard's live Classic Era interface 1.15.8; it is not a generic download for every Vanilla-era client.
Fix a missing AddOns entry
If ElvUI does not appear at character selection, inspect the directory depth. WoW must see a path such as AddOns/ElvUI/ElvUI_Classic.toc, not AddOns/ElvUI-v15.18/ElvUI/....
- Remove the outer GitHub or ZIP wrapper folder.
- Check that the folder is under _classic_era_, not _retail_ or _classic_.
- Restart the game after changing files.
Confirm the ElvUI Classic Era download and interface number
The ElvUI Classic Era download on this page is intended for Blizzard's live Classic Era branch. At the July 16, 2026 verification, Tukui reported ElvUI 15.18 and included Classic Era interface 1.15.8 in the supported patch list. The public repository also exposes a matching v15.18 tag. These facts identify a current source and client interface without claiming that the same archive supports every private server described as Vanilla.
Classic Era continues the original-world ruleset while its live client receives technical updates. That distinction matters because a private 1.12 client and Blizzard's current 1.15.8 client can share content themes but expose different addon APIs. Choose by interface number and client build rather than by the word “Vanilla.” If a server publishes its own addon requirements, follow those requirements and treat this live-client guide only as a reference.
Version freshness should be checked again after a Classic Era patch. The page records the release and verification dates so that a visitor can compare them with Tukui before installing. An undated mirror or a file labeled only “ElvUI Vanilla” does not provide enough evidence to replace the verified source.
Place the ElvUI Classic Era download in _classic_era_
The correct default location is World of Warcraft/_classic_era_/Interface/AddOns. Use Battle.net's Show in Explorer or Show in Finder action for the selected Classic Era client because WoW may be installed on another drive or in a custom directory. The ElvUI Classic Era download will not appear when it is copied into _classic_, _retail_ or a top-level Interface folder that the active executable never reads.
Open the downloaded ZIP and then open its outer repository folder. Copy ElvUI, ElvUI_Libraries and ElvUI_Options side by side into AddOns. Verify that a path such as AddOns/ElvUI/ElvUI_Classic.toc exists instead of a path with an extra ElvUI-15.18 wrapper. Keep the three core directories together because the options and libraries modules are part of the supported package, not optional decorations.
Close the game before changing files. If an older ElvUI installation already exists, back up WTF, remove the three old core directories and copy the three new directories cleanly. Merging releases can retain files that the current package removed and make an otherwise correct Classic Era installation fail.
Set up the ElvUI Classic Era download in game
At character selection, open AddOns and confirm that ElvUI, ElvUI Libraries and ElvUI Options are listed and enabled. Enter the world and complete the built-in setup before importing a profile. Classic Era layouts often emphasize compact action bars, party frames, threat visibility and limited class resources, but the correct choices depend on role, resolution and UI scale. The setup creates a predictable baseline that can be tested before additional addons are introduced.
Type /ec to open configuration. Check action bars, unit frames, nameplates, chat, bags and maps. If an imported profile was designed for Retail or another Classic expansion, some modules may not map directly to Classic Era systems. Resolution differences can also shift anchors. Use a copied profile for experiments so the baseline remains available.
Optional skins, media packs and WeakAuras should be installed after base ElvUI works without Lua errors. When a plugin fails, disable it and reload instead of replacing the ElvUI Classic Era download with a random older archive. Companion projects maintain their own version requirements and can lag behind a core update.
Troubleshoot and update an ElvUI Classic Era download
When ElvUI is absent from the AddOns list, inspect the install path, outer wrapper and selected Battle.net client. When it is listed but marked out of date, compare interface 1.15.8 with the actual client build and check whether Tukui has released a newer package. When the options panel is missing, confirm ElvUI_Options and ElvUI_Libraries came from the same archive as the main directory. These checks solve more Classic Era problems than repeated downloads.
Before an update, copy the Classic Era WTF folder and optionally export important profiles. Exit WoW, remove the three old core directories and copy the new ones. Do not delete WTF unless a controlled reset is the final troubleshooting step. If errors begin after updating, disable all optional plugins, create a temporary clean profile and test base ElvUI before restoring other components.
A historical tag is appropriate only when the current package no longer targets the client being used. Record the exact game build, chosen tag and working directory structure. That evidence makes a rollback reproducible. The ElvUI Classic Era download page favors a supported current package because live-client API changes make unsupported downgrades fragile even when the visual layout initially appears normal.
Classic Era characters can share account-level settings while still using character-specific layouts. After an ElvUI Classic Era download update, verify the active profile on more than one character before deleting the backup. A successful login on one character does not confirm that every class-specific action bar, aura filter or private profile migrated correctly. Keep the dated backup until those character checks are complete and repeat them after the next client patch.
Also inspect the AddOns button after Battle.net repairs or relocates the game. A repair can leave an older Classic Era installation on disk while the launcher starts a different copy. Confirm the executable path, ElvUI version and three folder timestamps together. This small audit prevents a correct ElvUI Classic Era download from being blamed when the active client is reading another directory.
